A Highway 50 Survey
Another atypical day making snow surveys. Usually it's storming but today it's good weather.
Travel to a snow course is quite often on skis.
The first step is to assemble the snow sampling set. It consists of aluminum tubes about 1.5 inches in diameter and 30 inches long. The bottom tube has a sharpened steel cutter section to cut down through the ice layers within the pack.
Today it looks like we'll use 4 sections- that means we can measure down through a pack 120 inches deep.
After the snow tubes are assembled we head out on the course. Here, Dudley connects two tube sections while Dave pulls out a third.
